A few lines I wrote in a Facebook discussion thread from the Մենք քիչ ենք, սակայն մեզ հայ են ասում… group. Blog filler.
I don’t know what you guys think but I find aggression against Turkey unjustified for any crime they committed against humanity (whether genocide or not). The genocide is part of our history and shall never be forgotten. The attempts of the Turkish government to dispel any Armenian pride or sense of Armenian heritage within us, especially among the Armenians in Turkey, are truly tragic as well.
But when we proudly shout that we were “the first Christian nation,” how can we still hold hatred in our hearts? How different are you from your enemy if you cannot learn to give up hatred? I cringe every time I hear that fellow Armenians have performed acts of aggression against Turks (e.g. killing Turkish diplomats). I am not advocating that we forget our past, or undermine the Genocide of 1915, but that we not seek revenge or retaliation toward Turks. Let them be “barbarous by nature,”but as a race which is prizes their heritage so highly, shouldn’t we remember our Christian roots? Wasn’t Christianity the soul of our nation when oh so many nations fought to convert us to Islam or other religions? We have all been told the story of “Katch Vartan” who protected our faith through a war we lost (though ideally, we should not have fought the war and ignored Persian threats of war or conversion….that’s not the point really). So what values do we uphold? Christian values of love and peace, or those which fuel the unbearably cruel actions of our enemies such like revenge (AKA retributive justice). Forgiving is a sacrificial act — it is not naive — but that is what is asked of a Christian nation. Will vengeful actions really bring about the peace we seek? Will they really bring honor to our massacred ancestors? If that is so, then we are no different than the Turks: our neighbors, our so-called enemies.
Armenian pride shouldn’t be characterized through hatred toward a group of people, but rather the Christian values which have defined us in years past as Armenians. To retaliate against Turks is the single most un-Armenian action you can ask for.
